Merry Christmas

Union Jack Galore

The Queen's Jubilee in June and the Olympics through August have deeply contributed to an enormous amount of stuff that has been "Union Jack" inspired,  from clothing to more humble accessories and down to cakes and vegetables (truly!). I thought I would show you a mini collection of pictures I took of all the things I came across the British stores in my ordinary shopping. My little gem buy is at the end. Really love it!

Delightful sponge cakes- which colour do you fancy?
Deliziosi dolcetti di pan di spagna - quale colore vi tenta?

Classic Ryvita crackers: don't they taste better in blue and red?
Classici crackers Ryvita: sembrano avere un sapore migliore in blu e rosso!

The humble salad has had a patriotic make-over!
Anche l'insalata diventa patriottica!

Batiste Dry shampoo stands up singing the national anthem- God save the Queen!
Batiste shampoo a secco in piedi a cantare l'inno nazionale - Dio salvi la regina!

My new pochette: so cool!
La mia nuova pochette: da sballo!

Love at first sight from Next: £ 28

It's now a statement accessory in my wardrobe, completes any outfit with a twist.

HAPPY HOLIDAY!!!!!

If you are Italian, you can't possibly be working this week. "Ferragosto" as we call August 15th, is a bank holiday and everybody leaves emptied cities behind to escape somewhere for the last week on the beach! I'll leave you to your relaxation and have some "me time" myself. I have a pile of books I want to read, a tropical beach waiting for me and some special time to spend with myself and my beloved ones. I wish you some happy time wherever you are, to reconnect with yourself and come back full of energy for new projects!

Where will I be going? Can you guess? Clue below...

London 2012 Opening Ceremony

E voi state seguendo le Olimpiadi? Vi è piaciuta la cerimonia di apertura?

Last weekend here in London it's been an incredible one, with the outstanding London 2012 Olympics Opening ceremony. The Queen made her acting debut as the latest Bond Girl in a video called Happy and Glorious where we see Daniel Craig as James Bond emerging from a black cab and being welcomed at Buckingham Palace by the Queen's corgis who tro along beside him as he is shown into a drawing room to meet his new boss. He accepts his latest mission to take the Queen to the Olympic stadium. Then the Queen and Bond climb into a helicopter and parachute (stunts of course!) into the stadium. As a real helicopter approached the stadium, the famous Bond theme played loudly and accompanied the entrance of the queen in the Royal Box where other members of the Royal family were already sitting. I believe the British were absolutely stunned by the video and the great dose of irony shown by the Queen who, for the first time, allowed a troupe of cameramen to have complete access to her private rooms at Buckingham Palace for this short film. What I found incredible, it was that the Queen already knew in April, when they filmed the video, the exact dress she would be wearing, hat included of course, at the opening ceremony in July!
Mr Bean also appeared in an evening full of surprises, creating comical havoc during the theme from Chariots of Fire.
The closing fireworks and the olympic torch lit by a young generation of athletes rather than by famous names, put an end to a rather stunning evening. Sir Paul Mccartney closed the event by singing Hey Jude, accompanied by an ecstatic public.
WOW!!!!!
Did you watch the ceremony? What did you think?

Relocation Relocation!!!

If you are familiar with the English television, you should know what I mean by Relocation, Relocation. If not, let me tell you. Relocation, Relocation is a Channel 4 property programme presented by Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer and it first aired in 2000. The reality show follows Kirstie and Phil as they try to hunt the dream homes for a couple in two places at once, usually one abroad and another in their own country. Well, I've got my dream worked out, both home and away, and every now and then I like to relocate from one country to another one, generally taking with me loads of luggage. Well, this time I have tried my best to fly light, believe me, and the result is as below. Not bad for a relocation of a couple of months, don't you think? So I'll keep you posted from London and start my OLIMPIC shopping soon (I'm sure I'll win a GOLD medal!!!).

Altrimenti, ecco in breve.

A postcard from London (2)

The last post of the week had to be dedicated to the most important event that last weekend filled the English streets with flying Union Jacks. It's not everyday that a monarch can celebrate 60 years of kingdom, and before Elizabeth II, in English history, only Queen Victoria managed to bag 64 years on the throne! So well done to these two incredible women, who, with Elizabeth I, are among the most memorable English monarchs. Definitely the long reign of Queen Victoria has contributed to form the character of the English nation with its sense of pride and belonging.
Street Parties have been held in many streets,  with long buffet tables with free food and drinks. A truly delightful event where only the sun wouldn't shine, but ehy, isn't that typically British? And apparently  the same happened when the Queen was crowned sixty years ago, it poured down all day (not that I was there though!). This time I was there and  I truly loved being part of the event; I literally grabbed the last seats available on the flight to cheer with the English crowds!
The pageant on the river Thames was truly stunning, the monarchs were all wearing outfits in the national colours, the Queen and Camilla in white, Kate truly gorgeous in red, and the "boys" in blue uniforms. Wow!!! I believe that William and Kate have contributed a great deal to the sense of pride and attachment that the British people feel for the royal family, often dubbed for years as disfunctional and cold especially after Lady Diana's accident and the various royal divorces.

In the Street parties I went, there were some incredibly yummy looking cakes, all shaped like the Union Jack, proving that even the English can cook, but maybe only every 60 years!!! (don't hate me...but it's true!!!).

To sum up, a really inspiring event.
Let's be honest, can you ever remember that cheering happening in Italy for a head of State? Mmmmm, NO. We all remember to be Italians only when we win the World Cup or an Olympic Gold Metal.  Singing the national anthem with strangers just because we are proud to be Italians...I'm afraid we still need to learn how to do it.

Sicilia...che dolce vacanza!

Cannoli siciliani

Cassata siciliana

Arancino catanese

Back...I'm back!!!

Back...I'm back! Here I am again after a tour de force rather than a relaxing holiday! Just a few days to visit Sicily, it has been like having to look at too many stunning pictures one after the other one without having enough time to take it all in. I might have had just a short break, but I have definitely had enough time to taste all the gorgeous cakes and specialities they make here. Not a place to go if you are on a diet! The weather has not been at its best (could have been warmer) but I suppose it has been reasonable with a few spots of rain on the first day in Catania and Taormina. I loved the Greek ruins in Siracusa, the baroque buildings in Ragusa Ibla and Noto (where I had the best ice cream of my life mmmhhhh!!!), the seafront in Giardini Naxos and the nightlife in Taormina. What can I say...I'm full! And now that I'm back to work, planning my next holiday, I relish on the last cannolo left I have, bought in Messina just before getting on the ferry and dreaming of the sunshine because I have had enough of this rain!!!
